On Azkals-Global Football Academy’s opening day. part 1

Posted: 13 April 2011

I’ve asked my supervisor days before the Azkals-Global Football Academy opening day to let me have the first shift, 7Am-4PM, on Monday. I was just thankful that I got the green light.

In my excitement to witness the opening day of the Football clinic, I forgot to assess my transporation. I just left the hospital building and rode on the first jeep I thought would pass by the Corinthian Garden gate. So when I got there, I left my ID to the lady guard and asked for instructions. “Walk straight, turn left on the first block then turn right.”

Just straight, left, and right. Pretty easy. It was until I made my first step and realized that it might be a long walk. Few more steps. It was going to be a long walk indeed. I’m used to walking, but it just felt different.

I just took it as warm up for my legs as I would be back to Rugby training after the Football session. I personally put myself on 8-Day Disabled List.

When I came to Corinthian Garden Football Field, I tried to look for familiar faces, most of which were from Global Smartmatic of UFL. I didn’t approach anyone yet. I was planning to check on my editor first. He came earlier.

He was on the other side of the field when I saw him. I can’t remember which happened first, the introduction to Mr. Ricky Chan or the chat with  Mr. Craig Burrows and Señor Rafael Garcia. I think it was the former.

So I’ve finally met Mr. Chan. He’s one of the directors of Azkals-Global Football Academy. Icko, as we call our Soccer Central Philippines editor, introduced us to each other. It was short though as the Philippine All-Star happened to be there too. We were introduced to each other, SCP and Philippine All-Star.

The truth is, I was still checking on my neurons’ memory folders about those people. I finally had the idea when Icho made a comment about the introduction. It seems my cluelessness isn’t over, from a gay name of a short shorts to the Philippine All-Stars’ identity. But my cluelessness didn’t end with them. More to follow.

Icko and me briefly discussed some things with Mr. Chan, but Icko had to consult with other people so he couldn’t give his affirmation, yet. Mr. Chan also had to discuss some things with the Philippine All-Star people, so with that we left and approached Mr. Craig Burrows, who introduced us to Señor Rafael Garcia.

We talked about Football, of course. Mr. Rafa also joined our conversation while watching his children in the pitch. As for what we talked about during that moment, I could hardly elaborate. I got them mixed with our conversations after the training session. I’m pretty sure though that it was Football in the Philippines.

Our friend Ria came a little later. It just made the discussion more interesting. Mi amici Ria never fails to give life to any event. While we’re into the discussion, Mr. Burrows or Señor Garcia pointed out the latter’s children. His son definitely caught my attention. I told Icko about it. “He looks like Messi.” When Icko realized it, he immediately positioned his camera to capture little Messi.

I will write more about this later. I’m tired. I just got back from playing Beach Touch (Rugby).
